Types of Games
A game is a structured form of play, usually undertaken for entertainment or fun. It may also be considered to be work or art, and often involves the use of game tokens, such as pawns on a board, dice, cards, or other objects.
A player’s role in a game is often defined by their actions and responses, which are driven by the narrative of the game. This narrative may include goals, rules, art, environments, stories, characters, items, powers, rewards, exploration and interaction between players.
Games can require skill, strategy, luck or a combination of these, depending on the tools and rules used. They can be played alone, with friends or in teams, on television, computer or mobile devices.
There are many different types of games, ranging from card games to board games, video games, and sports. Some are based on real-world situations while others are designed to be virtual simulations of specific events or circumstances, such as military combat or a sport.
Some games are turn-based and require players to make decisions on their turns, while others involve “real-time” play that allows players to contemplate the situation before deciding to act. A large number of board games use physical tokens to represent resources and progress, while a large number of card games and video games use cards or dice.
A video game, by contrast, requires no physical skill or strength, and can be played in various ways without requiring a player to interact with an actual person. These games are often used for computer learning, although they can be a source of entertainment or socializing as well.
